This is a picture of a typical Trapunto project. Paula will bring a variety of stencils of varying levels of difficulty so that each student can choose their own design.
Supplies:
- Fabric:
- Two 18” squares of muslin (or batik or hand-dyed fabric)
- One 18” square high-loft polyester batting or two squares low-loft polyester batting
- One 18” square cotton batting, such as Warm & Natural
- Wash-out marker, such as Wonder or Mark-B-Gone (Instructor will bring stencils appropriate for
Trapunto work.)
- Thread to match fabric (preferably 100% cotton) and 1 bobbin that you have filled with this thread before class
- If you want to use rayon or another decorative for the quilting, bring a spool of that; otherwise you can use the cotton above
- One bobbin filled with a neutral colored thread, such as ecru
- One spool water soluble basting thread, such as Vanish Extra by Superior Threads or Wash-A-Way by YLI
- Seam ripper
- Small scissors or thread snips
- Small blunt scissors or duckbill appliqué scissors
- Safety pins for basting
- Masking tape for basting
- Sewing machine, cleaned, oiled and ready to sew!
- Machine manual in case we have questions
- Free motion foot (also called “darning foot”) — open-toed if available for your machine (Bernina #24). If you are using a Bernina machine equipped with the Bernina Stitch Regulator, bring the foot and the box with all the sole plates.
NOTE:
Most machines come with a tray, sometimes called an extension table, that converts the free arm of the machine to a larger flat surface. It is important to bring this to class. If you have a larger extension table and the shop where you are taking this class has the space, bring the larger table.
