MACHINE EMBELLISHMENT TECHNIQUES

This is an example of the type of machine embellishment you will learn in this workshop. NOTE: Please bring a sewing machine with zig-zag capability. A straight stitch machine will not allow you to sew all the techniques demonstrated in this class.

Supplies:
  • One approximately 18” square “sandwich” of fabric (meaning two pieces of fabric and one piece of cotton batting). Hand-dyed fabrics are especially pretty; muslin can be very elegant with creamy embellishments.
  • You could also use a small quilt top (or a large block, depending on one’s perspective) or bring both — the fabric sandwich to practice on and the quilt top to work your artistry on
  • 1 yd. stabilizer, such as Stiffy or Tear-Easy
  • Lots of small (size 1) safety pins for pin basting layers
  • Various sized machine needles from 70 (for individual beads) to 100 (for heavier threads). I like Microtex Sharp and Jeans/Denim, both by Schmetz
  • Open-toed appliqué foot for couching wider ribbons (Bernina #20)
  • Braiding foot for narrow ribbons, yarns, etc. (Bernina #21)
  • Cording foot for pearls, beads, etc. (Bernina #12)
  • Monofilament thread, both clear and smoke
  • Suggested embellishments:
    • Decorative threads and cords of different weights, both for quilting and couching
    • Various widths and colors of ribbon, from 1/8” up to ?
    • Sequins, pearls and beads by the yard or individual
    • Bits of trim, lace, buttons, charms, ornaments — anything laying around the sewing room with no immediate purpose!
    • Feel free to bring items that might not suit your taste; someone else may like it and be willing to trade for something you like better!
