What
a great holiday season! I got the last “customer quilt” out the Sunday
before
Christmas and started working on two lap quilts to be given as gifts
on
Christmas morning. I finished the second at 10:30 PM Christmas
Eve!
Nothing
like taking it right down to the wire….but I didn’t miss
any holiday
parties
and Santa was VERY good to me — I must have been
“gooder”
than
I thought!
My
husband, Dan, and I went to Placerville for a few days after Christmas
to
visit
my family. We travelled the L-O-N-G way around
via Gardnerville, Ne-
vada,
where my dear friend Mary Ponce lives. Of course, Mary, Mary’s Mom
and
I had to go to the local quilt shop, The Quilt
House, where I just had to
buy
some fabric and a stencil and a wonderful book...I do want to note, how-
ever,
that none of us left emptyhanded!
If
you are in that area, The Quilt House is located right on the main
highway
at
1363-6 on Hwy 395 in Gardnerville; phone is 775-782-8845. The owner,
Janet,
has a wonderful selection of fabrics and it is
practically impossible
to
leave without buying some…I also noticed a number of great new books
and
patterns and a sizable collection of quilting stencils.
A
perfect time to visit would be on your way to the
2000 NQA show to be
held
June 22-25 in Reno, Nevada. This will be the 31st annual
NQA show
and
all of the ones I have seen have been don’t-miss-this shows. For
more
info,

I
should really rename this column “101 Ways to Spend Your Money” since
every
time I travel, I seem to find ways to dispose of mine.
I found a won-
derful
shop in old-town Auburn, California, called “The Christmas Shoppe”.
It
has all sorts of holiday items and an extensive
selection of Department
56
lighted houses and accessories. My financial downfall is that they
carry
a
Halloween line of Department 56 that I didn’t know existed. So I
now own
a
Haunted Mansion, Fortune Telling and Costume Shop, various
trick-or-
treaters,
black cats, autumn trees, etc. Oh, well, it’s only money!
I
have also found ways to spend money, however,
without ever leaving
home.
This is getting dangerous! For those of you
who have asked me
about
finding more Jewish-themed fabrics, you can contact Lauree Feigen-
baum
at Judaica and ask for her fabric swatches. She has so many beauti-
ful
fabrics at such great prices and it is almost impossible to choose.
I look
for
this type of fabric everywhere I go and I have not seen most
of what she
carries.
Call her at 1-800-DREIDEL and request a catalog and swatches.

News
It has been a very busy fall. In early September, I taught in the
Sacramento,
California area. Toward the end of
the month, I taught and lectured in
Carson City, Nevada, made a sweep through Reno and Sacramento
and
finished by teaching a 3-day workshop in the San Francisco Bay area.
Practicing My Snake Charming |
Bat Tiles in Spain?
You Bet! |
During October, my husband Dan and
I spent a week in Marrakech,
Morocco and another week in Malaga, Spain. We took a lot of pictures
of
wonderful tile work which I am sure
will be translated into future quilts.
Some of the more interesting pictures involve six-pointed
stars and I will
most likely publish them as patterns next year.
I just got back from Art Quilt Tahoe (put on by a quilt
store called Fabrica-
tions in Auburn, California) and it was a most memorable experience. The
conference was held November 5 through 10 in Lake Tahoe,
Nevada, at
the Hyatt Regency Hotel. There were 8 teachers holding classes: Moneca
Calvert, Nancy Crow, Patty Hawkins,
Ruth McDowell, Velda Newman,
Yvonne Porcella, Gabrielle Swain and David Walker. The price of the
con-
ference ($1000, $1300 if you want a room all to yourself) included
4 days
of instruction, five nights lodging and all meals. The most
delectable food
was served - the farewell dinner included filet mignon
and crème brulee
(my personal choice for food of the gods)!
I took a class from Yvonne Porcella; we painted fabric
for 1-1/2 days and
then worked on quilt tops or garments using the fabric we had
made. On
the final night, when all of the conference participants showed
and shared,
I was just knocked out by the accomplishments
of the group as a whole.
All of the instructors helped us to grow and stretch
our skills and I have al-
ready signed up for next year, Art Quilt Tahoe 2000, to be
held November
8-13. There are so many wonderful instructors on the faculty
next year that
I have not been able to make up my mind yet who I want to take!
If this sounds like something that you would
love to do, you can contact
Fabrications by telephone at (530)-887-0600.
Their website address is

I am actually staying home for a couple of months now
to catch up on my
work! I will start teaching again toward the end of February,
so if you are
interested in a workshop for 2000 or beyond, just check the schedule
and
let me know…..
